I Have the Right to Self-Care (Part 1)

Me, including every working woman out there, understands that it is easy to say ‘SELF-CARE’ but much harder to practice while multitasking.

The question comes: Why? For many of us, self-care feels like indulgence or luxury while others feel. guilty when we deprioritise home, kids, work, etc. This definition of selfcare needs to be redefined in our minds. We must remind ourself that prioritising personal well-being is necessary. Whether as a mother, partner or professional, ‘You can’t pour from the empty cup.’ When you feel recharged, you are more patient, positive, and able to give your best to others.

From my perspective, there are two major types of Self-Care:

  1. Physical Self-Care: Focuses on maintaining physical health through a balanced life-style, nutrition, exercise and self-grooming.
  2. Mental/Emotional Self-Care: Focuses on mental well-being through stress management and nurturing inner peace.
Let’s discus the challenges that working women can face in prioritising self-care:

  • Many women feel GUILTY for taking time for themselves. Always remember the ripple effect of self-care that ‘You can’t pour from the empty cup.’ Self-Care is not Selfish.
    • Take a small initiative - only 10 minutes a day for something you enjoy.
  • Many women think it is IMPOSSIBLE due to time constraints and busy routines.
    • Integrate self-care into your daily routine: take 5-minute mindful break twice a day to practice deep breathing or stretch.
  • Many women aim to be PERFECTIONIST in all aspects of life (as a mother, partner or professional). This mindset turns self-care into self-sacrifice.
    • Creates space for self-care. Accept that not everything has to be perfect. It’s OK to delegate tasks, ask for help and say ‘NO’ to extra responsibilities.
  • Many women ignore self-care due to the misconception of  FINANCIAL LIMITATIONS.
    • Focus on low cost or free activities: go for a walk, enjoy homemade face mask or spend time in nature.
In conclusion, self-care is a mindset shift. By incorporating small changes into your routine, you can take better care of yourself, guilt-free. It’s not about finding more time; it’s about making time. You don’t need perfection, but you do need balance. Prioritise yourself because you matter too. Remember, ‘I have the Right to Self-Care.’

Feel free to share your experiences and insights to inspire our fellow warriors who are trying to make self-care a priority. We are in this together!

Stay tuned for PART 2. Let’s keep the momentum going!
